Rapha Randonnée Weekend - Catalonia
24 May — 28 May 2012
Starting and finishing in the historic city of Girona, the Randonnée Weekend Catalonia takes you into the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees and along the training roads used by many of the professionals based in the area. It’s a largely undiscovered region, perfect for cycling with deserted roads and a favourable climate. Over the three day route you’ll discover some special, obscure cols, experience warm Catalan hospitality as well as getting to tackle the local pros yardstick, the fearsome climb of Rocacorba.

24 May — 28 May 2012
Day One - Girona to Santa Eugenia de Berga
Distance: 110km
Total climbing: 2000m
Featured climbs: Col de Revell (820m)
Heading West out of
Girona, using a route recommended to us by Girona-based Team Sky rider Michael Barry, we wind our way through quiet roads and warm villages before passing
through Angles and the gateway to the hills. We head for Osor and Sant Hilari
Sacalm along tiny, untrafficked roads, perfect for cycling. After cresting the
Col de Revell (820m) it's a mostly downhill run to our overnight stay in Santa Eugenia de Berga.

Day Two - Santa Eugenia de Berga to Llanars
Distance: 125km
Total climbing: 2500m
Featured climbs: Coll de Canes (1120m), Coll de Coubet (1039m), Coll de Sentigosa (1064m), Coll de Surroca (1345m)
Day 2 starts with a
gentle 5km climb as we head north towards the Judgement Mountains. The rest
of the mornings ride is undulating as we pass through olive groves and farms,
but with the silhouette of the Pyrenees on the horizon to remind us of the
work to come. After lunch we have the obstacles of the Coll de Canes (1120m)
and Coll de Sentigosa (1064m) to overcome before descending into Sant Joan de
Abadesses. We're not quite home and dry yet as the 11km climb to the 12th
century Romanesque church at Sant Marti Surroca still lies in front of us.
From here, though we have an amazing downhill run to our resting point for
the night in Llanars.

Day Three - Llanars to Girona
Distance: 140km
Total climbing: 2500m
Featured climbs: Rocacorba (992m)
Our final day packs a
lot in. We encounter the entriguing scenery of the Garrotxa Volcanic Region
and Olot, the city of volcanoes, and
experience some sublime cycling roads in the steep sided, wooded valleys
around Rocabruna and Oix. On top of all that (literally!) is the climb of Rocacorba, a 14km ascent frequented by the likes of Dan Martin, David Millar and Ryder Hejesdal. The tough climb with pitches upto 15% is rewarded by an amazing 360 degree vista of Catalonia. Returning to Girona, we'll spend an enjoyable evening in the town with some local tapas and a glass or two of the local tipple.
